Eight million euros for meat-free steak

Foodtech Project Eaden successfully completed its seed round. Now the sustainable steak is to be launched on the market by 2023.
Berlin-based startup Project Eaden raises eight million euros in its seed round. The round is led by Creandum. Other investors include early-stage VC Magnetic, Atlantic Food Labs, Shio Capital, Trellis Road and several business angels. With the new funding, the startup plans to launch its meat-free steak in 2023.
"As a father of three young children, I want the next generations to be able to live a life full of joy," says co-founder Jan Wilmking. Climate change and the loss of biodiversity would threaten the human livelihood. Meat consumption plays a central role in this, he says. By producing sustainable meat substitutes, the company aims to reduce meat consumption. Wilmking co-founded the company this year with Mymuesli founder Hubertus Bessau and David Schmelzeisen.
"David, Hubertus and Jan really form the ideal team you look for as a venture capitalist, and when I first saw and tasted the steak prototype they had developed, I was thrilled," says Carl Fritjofsson, general partner at Creandum. The investor describes the startup as the "Tesla of sustainable food."
