Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin are not only leading startup metropolises in Europe, but also worldwide. This is confirmed by a study conducted by Startup Genome.

Berlin is considered one of Germany's startup metropolises. The German capital also shows its best side in an international comparison: In Startup Genome's new ranking, Berlin ranks 16th out of 140 startup ecosystems. For this, the consulting and research company evaluated metropolises on the basis of seven criteria, including market reach, networking and number of skilled workers.

Since 2017, investors have poured a total of $23 billion into Berlin-based startups. In the first half of 2021, they received a record $4.7 billion. For the first half of this year, however, the sum dropped again to US$2.4 billion. A special feature of Berlin as a location is the amount paid out in exits. Since 2017, five startups completed exits worth more than one billion U.S. dollars. In addition, Berlin's startup ecosystem has since produced 14 unicorns.

Unbeaten in first place in the ranking is Silicon Valley. Between January and May of this year, startups from the region received a total of 44.5 billion U.S. dollars in venture capital investments. New York City and London share second place, followed by Boston in the US. Amsterdam and Paris were the other European cities to make it into the top-20 ranking - in 14th and 15th place, still just ahead of Berlin.

"It is extremely gratifying to see London and Berlin recognized in this independent report as two of the best global hubs for startups," said Miriam Ducke, European Director at London & Partners. "Our two great cities are driving the growth of the European tech sector and enabling it to compete on the global stage."
