Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin are not only leading start-up cities in Europe, but also worldwide. This is confirmed by a study by Startup Genome.

Berlin is considered one of Germany's start-up capitals. The German capital also shows its best side in an international comparison: In the new ranking by Startup Genome, Berlin is ranked 16th out of 140 start-up ecosystems. The consulting and research company evaluated metropolitan areas based on seven criteria, including market reach, networking and number of qualified employees.

Since 2017, investors have poured a total of 23 billion US dollars into start-ups in Berlin. In the first half of 2021, they received a record sum of 4.7 billion US dollars. For the first half of this year, however, the sum fell again to 2.4 billion US dollars. A special feature of Berlin is the amount paid out in exits. Since 2017, five start-ups have completed exits worth over one billion US dollars. Berlin's start-up ecosystem has also produced 14 unicorns since then.

Silicon Valley is unbeaten in first place in the ranking. Between January and May of this year, start-ups from the region received a total of 44.5 billion US dollars in venture capital investments. New York City and London share second place, followed by Boston in the US. Amsterdam and Paris were the other European cities to make it into the top 20 ranking - in 14th and 15th place, just ahead of Berlin.

"It is extremely pleasing that London and Berlin have been recognized as two of the best global hubs for startups in this independent report," says Miriam Ducke, European Director at London & Partners. "Both of our great cities are driving the growth of the European tech sector and enabling it to compete on the global stage."
