Quazy Foods, the Berlin-based biotech startup, is focusing on microalgae as the key to meeting the world's food needs. Find out how their pre-seed funding is making this possible.

Berlin - Biotech startup Quazy Foods announced a pre-seed funding round worth over 800,000 euros to unlock the potential of microalgae as a sustainable food source.

The funding round was led by ProVeg International, a global NGO that runs accelerator programs to support startups to transform the food system, Antler, one of Europe's most active private early-stage investors, and Sprout and About Ventures, an impact investment firm. Various business angels with different backgrounds and strong business networks also participated in the round. Quazy Foods also secured a number of local and European innovation grants.

Microalgae combine exceptional nutrient profiles with outstanding functional properties, making them a powerful renewable resource of the future.

The funding will allow Quazy Foods to hire key strategic staff and produce the first samples of their product. This paves the way for the pilot phase of their microalgae production.

The founders of Quazy Foods - brother and sister duo Berenike Zimmer and Arvid Seeberg-Elverfeldt - established Quazy Foods at the end of 2021. Having grown up in the Alps and by the oceans, they have a passion for nature and tackling the challenges of climate change. Both siblings have gained experience in various management positions in companies and start-ups.

Finding new and innovative ways to feed the global population could change our eating habits and help save the planet. We are delighted to have supported Quazy Foods

Frederik Brandis, Associate Director at Antler

With the United Nations Environment Programme predicting that the global population will reach 10 billion by 2050, resulting in a 56%ige increase in food consumption, there is a global search for plant-based foods to meet this growing demand.

Microalgae are often mentioned as a possible solution, as they grow much faster than plants and animals. The European Union declared in November 2022 that "now is the time to fully exploit the potential of algae as a renewable resource in Europe".
