Switzerland remains top emigration destination for Germans
Marc Nemitz | 26.08.2024According to the Federal Statistical Office, Austria and Switzerland remain the most popular emigration destinations for Germans. The advantage of both countries: no language barriers and geographical proximity.
Wiesbaden, August 26, 2024 - Switzerland remains the preferred emigration destination for Germans in Europe. At the beginning of 2023, around 315,960 German citizens were living in the neighboring country, which is 4,660 more people than in the previous year. These figures confirm the ongoing trend that Switzerland is particularly attractive to Germans due to its geographical proximity and low language barriers.
Austria in second place among emigration destinations
Austria is the second most popular European emigration destination for Germans. At the beginning of 2023, around 225,010 Germans were living there, an increase of 3.7% compared to the previous year. Both countries offer advantages for German emigrants due to their cultural and linguistic proximity.
Decline in the number of Germans in Spain
Spain, the first non-German-speaking country on the list, on the other hand, recorded a decline in the German population. At the beginning of 2023, around 125,790 Germans were living there - 11.8% fewer than in the previous year. The number of German emigrants to Spain fell by 16,840 people, indicating a move away from this previously very popular destination.
Naturalizations in Switzerland at record level
Switzerland is also the country where Germans most frequently acquire citizenship. In 2022, the number of naturalizations reached a new record of 8,960, an increase of 12.8% compared to the previous year. By comparison, in Sweden, which is in second place, 1,320 Germans took up citizenship in the same period. The number of naturalizations in France also fell slightly to around 420 in 2022.
Switzerland for founders and start-ups
Switzerland offers a number of advantages for founders and start-ups, but also some challenges. The advantages include political stability, a strong economic environment and proximity to leading research institutes that promote innovation. Switzerland also scores with an attractive tax system and a highly qualified labor market. The good connections to the European market and the high quality of life also attract many entrepreneurs. However, the high cost of living and wages, as well as strict regulatory requirements and limited access to large markets can pose potential challenges. Founders must therefore carefully consider whether the Swiss environment suits their business model.
