Berlin start-up convinces Riot Games

The League of Legends developer invests in Stratosphere Games. In total, the start-up raised over three million euros.

Berlin-based online games developer Stratosphere Games has raised more than three million euros from various investors in the gaming scene, according to Gründerszene and Games Economy report. The capital comes, among others, from Riot Games, the developer of the well-known game League of Legends.

The fund 1Up Ventures, existing investor Skycatcher and the German Federal Ministry of Economics also participated. The latter is said to have added more than one million euros. The money is to go into the development of the cooperative online shooter called Desolation, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic science fiction world.

Stratosphere Games was founded in 2015 by Kristian Metzger and employs 67 people. The goal is to have 100 by the end of 2023. In the fall, the start-up plans to release the space game Homeworld Mobile together with US developer Gearbox Publishing, and it also plans to release the historical-style strategy game Dawn of Ages. Stratosphere has received more than half a million euros from the German government for the development of both games.
