From Magnet to Anchor: The UnternehmerTUM Incubator in Munich’s Startup Network

Two Hubs, One Direction

For over ten years, Gründungsmagnet has been connecting student startup initiatives throughout the DACH region, raising the visibility of their work, and advocating for their interests with decision-makers in business, academia, and politics. For this network to be effective, it needs partners who pick up exactly where student startup initiatives leave off: at the transition from the initial idea to a viable business model. One of these partners is the UnternehmerTUM Incubator.

From the Association to the Individual Startup

What Gründungsmagnet accomplishes at the association level for the entire German-speaking region—namely, bringing people, knowledge, and policy together—is what the UnternehmerTUM Incubator does in concrete terms for individual teams. It is part of UnternehmerTUM, Europe’s largest center for innovation and entrepreneurship, and supports the earliest phase of the journey—from the initial business idea to market entry. Since 2018, over 1,000 teams have been supported; alumni teams have raised more than 900 million euros in funding; and around 70 percent of the companies founded through the program are still active today.

histonaut: Using X-ray technology to make visible what was previously invisible

What if X-ray technology could make structures visible that are barely detectable with conventional imaging? This is precisely the question the histonaut team is exploring. As part of the UnternehmerTUM Incubator Spring Batch 2026, the team is developing a novel X-ray imaging method designed to significantly improve the visualization of soft and low-contrast tissue in particular, with promising applications in medical diagnostics and beyond.

At the heart of the system is high-speed X-ray hardware, complemented by software for browser-based 3D visualization that uses deep learning to automatically classify and segment relevant structures. What makes this approach unique is that the procedure is non-destructive, meaning tissue samples are preserved for follow-up analyses—an approach also known as virtual histology that is of great interest far beyond the industrial sector, particularly in pathology and surgery.

ProviGenAI: More Process Intelligence for Biological Production

The second team, ProviGenAI, recently completed the UnternehmerTUM Incubator and is dedicated to one of the most complex production environments of all: biological production—ranging from bioprocessing and fermentation at CDMOs to active ingredient manufacturing in pharmaceutical and biotech companies, all the way to cell and gene therapy.

Every production run in this environment depends on dozens of interrelated variables, often relying on outdated equipment and human experience rather than machine intelligence. The result is significant yield losses, process bottlenecks, and inefficiencies that cost the industry billions annually. ProviGenAI is therefore building a process intelligence platform that integrates into existing workflows, reduces process variability, improves yields, and cuts both time and costs when scaling biological processes.

From Network to Startup

histonaut and ProviGenAI exemplify what lies at the heart of every tech startup in Munich. A strong idea, a team, and the question of whether research can actually be turned into a business model.
