In-Space Manufacturing: How could DCUBED's innovative technology improve satellite efficiency and advance space exploration?

MUNICH, December 19, 2023: DCUBED, a NewSpace hardware company in Germany, and Munich University of Applied Sciences have received a significant grant from the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. The grant, part of the Bavarian Space Research Program, amounts to over one million US dollars and supports a two-year research project.

We want to be the first to show that it is possible to manufacture structures directly in space. And we want to be the first to develop manufacturing capacities in space to market maturity.

Dr. Thomas Sinn, CEO & Founder DCUBED

The project, planned from January 2024, focuses on in-space manufacturing (ISM) technology, specifically the world's first 3D printing in open space. The main objective is to produce support structures for satellite solar panels using this method. Currently, such structures are prefabricated on Earth and then transported into space. ISM could allow them to be printed directly in space, potentially offering lighter, simpler and more cost-effective solutions.

The ability to produce in space will open up completely new potential for business and science. This will allow us on Earth to benefit much more from technologies from space in the future.

Prof. Markus Pietras, Professor of Aerospace Engineering

The application of this technology could increase the availability of energy in space, which would lead to improved satellite performance. This could ultimately contribute to an increased data transmission rate to Earth and open up new opportunities for space products and research.

The promotion of innovative technologies in the space sector is an important step in further strengthening Bavaria as a location for high technology.

Dietmar Schneyer, Head of the Aerospace and Mobility Department at the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs,

DCUBED and Munich University of Applied Sciences have been working together since 2019, with the company providing financial and personnel support for research and funding a doctorate on this topic. DCUBED, headquartered near Munich, is a company that develops hardware for space missions. The company is planning the first demonstration of 3D printing in open space in 2024. In addition to its German location, DCUBED is also planning to expand to Broomfield, Colorado, USA, to strengthen its presence in the emerging NewSpace market.
