BMH, EIC Fund and Ghazan Commodities invest in fermentation process to convertCO2 into biopolymers

BMH Beteiligungs-Managementgesellschaft Hessen mbH, EIC Fund and Ghazan Commodities GmbH have invested in CO2BioClean GmbH. The startup is developing a process for processing carbon dioxide into biodegradable plastic to combat plastic pollution and the rise in greenhouse emissions. The fresh capital will be used to build a pilot plant to scale the patented process.

We look forward to helping the team contribute to a more sustainable economy through its development.

Helge Haase, Investment Director of BMH

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Fabiana Fantinel and Dr. Alessandro Carfagnini, CO2BioClean GmbH is developing a process to produce biodegradable plastic. The company uses non-pathogenic bacteria to convert CO2 into biopolymer in a fermentation process. To do this, CO2 emissions from the company's customers are captured before they are released into the atmosphere. The process takes place at customers' facilities and 1.5 kg of CO2 is used to produce one kg of biopolymer. The biopolymers obtained can be completely biodegraded within one year.

Both the reduction ofCO2 emissions and the resulting cost savings in industrial plants, as well as the possibility of improving their supply situation with the applied technology for conversion into biopolymers, can be classified as groundbreaking.

Dominik Talebi, LL.M., Vice Chairman & CIO of Ghazan Global

The Eschborn, Germany-based startup offers a process for producing CO2-based biopolymers. It has already signed collaborations with industry partners such as Nippon Gases and Procter & Gamble. The EU Commission awarded the company a "Seal of Excellence" in 2020, and in 2021 CO2BioClean received a €2.26 million grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC). Now the company plans to scale up its technology from a 10-liter prototype to a 350-liter pilot plant. Nothing is known about the size of the current seed round at the time of publication.
