TGFS makes seven-figure investment in SaxonQ

TGFS invests in Saxon quantum start-up. SaxonQ develops mobile quantum computers that work at room temperature without cooling.

Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen (TGFS) is investing a seven-figure sum in the Leipzig-based deep-tech start-up SaxonQ, which is developing mobile quantum computers based on diamond chips with NV centers. This technology enables operation at room temperature.

Quantum computing from the lab into practice

SaxonQ addresses one of the biggest hurdles in quantum computing: reliable use outside of specialized laboratory environments. Conventional systems require cooling down to -273 °C, complex infrastructure and are therefore expensive and inflexible. The NV technology further developed by SaxonQ anchors the qubits (computing units of a quantum computer) stably in diamond chips. The result is compact, mobile devices that can be operated without cooling and with a standard power socket. The first systems are already in use at Fraunhofer IWU and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Leipzig team with scientific depth and industrial experience

The company was founded in 2021 by Prof. Dr. Marius Grundmann and Prof. Dr. Jan Meijer from Leipzig University. The management is shared by Prof. Grundmann and Dr. Frank Schlichting, who brings management experience from the IT, semiconductor, automotive and energy sectors. This combination of scientific excellence and entrepreneurial experience puts SaxonQ in a good position in a rapidly developing future market.

TGFS strengthens Saxony's deep tech ecosystem

With this investment, TGFS is specifically supporting a key company in Saxony's high-tech landscape. According to TGFS Managing Director Sören Schuster, the commitment is intended to help consolidate Saxony as a region of innovation in quantum computing.

The systems already in use impressively demonstrate that quantum computing is not just a research topic, but real practice. We see considerable potential for further development - from new architectural approaches to the expansion of production capacities.

Parallel to the investment, SaxonQ is preparing a larger financing round to further miniaturize the technology and achieve the integration of quantum processors down to chip size. To this end, the production technology (e.g. single-ion implantation) will be further developed.
